Several villages in Maharashtra’s coastal Raigad district are currently experiencing a severe water shortage, and the local government has begun implementing various relief measures like supplying water via tankers and drilling wells to tide the situation over, according to authorities.
They said that just 35% of the total water storage now resides in the dams located across Raigad. The number of communities now affected by the water crisis currently stands at 35 villages and 113 wadis, with a projected increase to 1,328. The government would likely spend a total of Rs 7,61,00,000 on relief efforts this year.
The villages in question are found in the district’s Karjat, Khalapur, Pen, Mahad, Poladpur, and Sudhagad tehsils. The relief measure cost Rs 6,6,75,000 in 2012–13, and it cost Rs 9,94,24,000 in 2021–22.
According to the officials, seven dams in the area have less than 40% of their entire water capacity stored, while eight other dams have more than 40%.
