The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in collaboration with central intelligence agencies detained a person wanted by the police in connection with the train fire in Kerala from Ratnagiri late on Tuesday night.
A senior Maharashtra ATS official confirmed that Sharukh Saifi was detained at a railway station in Ratnagiri. Senior Maharashtra ATS official said, “We have taken him into custody based on intelligence provided by the central intelligence agency. He has accepted his crime. We are in the process of handing him over to the Kerala Police.”
Maharashtra ATS has arrested the person who killed three people by setting fire to a train compartment in Kerala’s Kozhikode. According to the information, a team of Kerala Police has also reached Ratnagiri to take custody of the accused. According to the Maharashtra Police, the name of the accused is Shahrukh Saifi. On the incident, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav also said that the perpetrator of this heinous crime has been nabbed. He said, “I thank Maharashtra Government, Police, and RPF-NIA who caught the accused so quickly.”
On the other hand, in the case of a fire in a train in Kozhikode, Kerala, DGP Anil Kant, Thiruvananthapuram said, “The suspected accused has been taken into custody. He will be brought back to Kerala. I am in touch with the DGP of Maharashtra. After detailed questioning of the accused, we will be able to get more details.”
Shahrukh’s location was traced a day ago in Ratnagiri. He went to Ratnagiri Civil Hospital for treatment of a head injury. He was injured due to falling while getting down after setting fire to the bogie of a train in Kerala. However, Shahrukh ran away from the hospital without getting treatment. The incident of setting passengers on fire by sprinkling inflammable substances inside a moving train in Kozhikode, Kerala came to light on the night of 2 April 2023. The accused had a dispute with co-passengers over sitting on the seat, after which he threw a bottle full of chemicals and set it on fire.
Seeing the sudden fire in the bogie, the woman traveling with the child jumped from the moving train itself. Apart from the two, the police later recovered the body of another person from the tracks. During the arson, 9 people aboard the train were also seriously injured.
