The CBI has arrested a CGST superintendent belonging to the tax department. The tax superintendent is accused of taking a bribe of Rs 5 lakh. In fact, the officer is alleged to have demanded a bribe of Rs 15 lakh to settle tax related issues of a Chinese company. Officials shared information in this regard on Friday. In fact, the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) superintendent had demanded Rs 30 lakh from a Chinese company to settle tax related matters.
However, later the accused allegedly negotiated and the bribe amount was brought down to Rs 15 lakh. The complainant’s company had earlier refused to pay the bribe. For this reason a meeting was held at Mumbai’s Wadala station, where the superintendent reduced the bribe amount to 15 lakhs. After these allegations were confirmed, a trap was laid by the CBI and an operation was launched. Under this operation, the tax superintendent was arrested red-handed by the CBI while accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh.
The CBI has also conducted raids at the offices and residential premises of the accused in Mumbai and Ghaziabad. During this, the CBI has recovered about Rs 42.70 lakh in cash, along with documents of movable and immovable properties, incriminating documents have also been recovered. The arrested accused was produced before the Special Judge, CBI Cases on Friday. The judge sent the tax superintendent to police custody till August 21.
