Maharaja Chhatrapati Shivaji
One of the greatest Maratha kings, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, established the Maratha Empire by carving out an enclave from the Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur. On February 19, Maharashtra celebrates his birthday, which is also a public holiday. Every year, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is observed on a different Hindu tithi. India is commemorating the famous Maratha ruler’s 394th birthday this year.
Belonging to the Bhonsle Maratha clan, Shivaji Bhosale was also called Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. According to the Hindu calendar, he was born in Shivneri Fort in 1630, during Falgun’s Krishna Paksha 3.
Past Events
According to historical accounts, Shivaji Maharaj took control of the Torna fort when he was sixteen years old. A year later, he also took control of the Raigad and Kondana forts. He is also well known for bringing back the Hindavi Swarajya celebration.
