On Saturday, the Union Minister for Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said that India has begun its path to become a semiconductor center. This announcement came on the same day that the United States-based company Micron Technology broke ground for its around Rs 22,500 crore ($2.75 billion) chip manufacturing and test facility here.
Within three months of Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting Sanjay Mehrotra, the President and CEO of Micron Technology in the United States, the company has started construction on its plant, which is unprecedented. The minister said this while stressing that India will soon need chips worth Rs 5 lakh crore to meet the growing demand.
Micron has indicated that it is willing to spend up to $825 million in the construction of a semiconductor assembly and testing plant in India, with the assistance of the Indian government.
It is anticipated that the total investment of $2.75 billion would, during the next five years, provide about 5,000 direct jobs and generate 15,000 chances for employment within the community.
According to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, this is a historic and epic moment for a nation that has squandered countless chances over the course of the last 70 years.
“Within the last nine to ten years, we have achieved significant advancements. “I have absolutely no doubt that this Micron’s state-of-the-art plant will be a beacon to all investors, other manufacturers, and participants in the global semiconductor ecosystem,” Chandrasekhar said to the gathering. “It is certainly a very important milestone,”
The company’s Assembly, Test, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) division is being established on 93 acres of land in the Sanand GIDC-II industrial park. It is anticipated that this division would be operational within the next 18 months. Wafers will be processed at the facility in order to create Ball Grid Arrays (BGA), which are integrated circuit packages, memory modules, and solid-state drives.
The pledge of a financial aid of up to 50 percent was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the month of July to players who seek to establish semiconductor manufacturing facilities in the nation.
At the SemiconIndia 2023 conference, which was held in Gandhinagar, he was quoted as saying, “we are continuously carrying out policy reforms to accelerate the growth of the country’s semiconductor sector.”
