In order to repair a breach in a vital supply tunnel, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ordered a 15% water reduction for Mumbai for 30 days starting on March 31.
According to a BMC press statement, water has been pouring from the tunnel since it was recently damaged in Thane while being dug for a borewell.
The Bhandup water complex, which manages 65% of the total water delivered to Bombay, gets around 75% of its supply via this 15-km-long tunnel with a diameter of 5,500 mm, claims the local authorities.
“This tunnel in Thane was damaged when a borewell was dug, and now there are significant water leaks. According to the BMC announcement, it is required to entirely isolate the tunnel for repairs and utilize a different transmission system to provide water to Bhandup during that time.
According to the corporation, water supplies to Mumbai and its suburbs would be impacted as transmission systems are switched over and repairs are made. As a result, the local council stated it had decided to impose a water reduction of up to 15%.
The BMC also urged residents to cooperate with them and utilize water wisely.
