Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, said that his nation will join NATO before the alliance conference, from which he anticipated a “algorithm” for Kyiv to formally join the military alliance. Zelensky said, “We are striving to make the algorithm for acquiring membership as clear and quick as possible. We are still working on the terminology, that is, on the particular phrases of such confirmation, but we already understand that Ukraine will be in the alliance.
According to Zelensky, the summit must affirm that Ukraine is ‘de facto’ a member of NATO given that it possesses its weaponry and adheres to its ideals.
Even if many opinions have been expressed, it is still obvious that Ukraine deserves to be a part of the alliance. We need a loud signal right now since there is a battle. And now, we need this signal,” Zelensky added.
Joe Biden, the US president, will meet Zelensky?
Zelensky will have a one-on-one meeting with US president Joe Biden at the summit, according to Reuters, which cited a US source. However, the Ukrainian president has not yet formally confirmed his attendance at the alliance gathering in Lithuania.
As Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey supported Sweden’s application to join NATO, Joe Biden expressed his appreciation and said he was looking forward to welcoming Sweden as the US’ 32nd NATO partner. In his statement, Joe Biden thanked Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of NATO, for his “steadfast leadership” and said, “I welcome the statement issued by Turkiye, Sweden and the NATO Secretary General this evening, including the commitment by President Erdogan to transmit the Accession Protocol for Sweden to Turkiye’s Grand National Assembly for swift ratification. In order to strengthen defence and deterrence in the Euro-Atlantic region, I am prepared to collaborate with President Erdogan and Turkiye. As our 32nd NATO ally, I am eager to welcome Prime Minister Kristersson and Sweden. And I appreciate Secretary General Stoltenberg’s unwavering leadership,” he said.
