After a 7.1-magnitude earthquake rattled the nation’s northeastern islands area on Monday, New Zealand is evaluating the potential for a tsunami danger.
At 12:41 pm local time, a 49 km deep earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands, according to the Xinhua news agency.
In areas along the shore where the quake was felt “for longer than a minute or was strong enough that it was hard to stand,” people should immediately self-evacuate, according to a statement from New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency.
The statement continued, “In some regions, a tsunami may have been created and may reach shortly. Evacuate immediately to the closest high ground or as far inland as you can.
