Harsh Dev Singh, the leader of the National Panthers Party (NPP), said today that the Supreme Court would hear a writ case calling for early elections for the Jammu and Kashmir legislature on Thursday.
Singh, a former minister and practicing attorney, has petitioned the supreme court to provide permission for the Union territory to resume its democratic processes.
“The Supreme Court has scheduled to hear the writ petition concerning the holding of early assembly elections in J&K on July 6 (Thursday),” Singh said in a statement today.
He said that the case will be considered by a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, citing the “cause list” released by the Supreme Court registry.
Jammu & Kashmir reached the five-year mark without an elected government on June 19. On June 19, 2018, it was placed under governor’s control after the BJP ended its partnership with the PDP.
On August 5, 2019, the Center repealed Article 370, which had given Jammu and Kashmir special status, and divided the state into Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, two Union territories.
The NPP leader said that the “uneasy silence” maintained by the Centre and the Election Commission of India on the matter of holding assembly elections in the Union territory pushed him to file a petition with the highest court.
