Over 17 lakh Maharashtra government employees commences strikes for OPS
More than 17 lakh Maharashtra government employees commenced their indefinite strike on Tuesday , demanding the reintroduction of the Old Pension Scheme in the state.
According to reports, the Maharashtra State Government Employees Federation has assured that the strike will continue until the government accepts their demands. However, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led state government is in no mood to bow down and has made it clear that strict disciplinary action will be taken against the employees going on strike from March 14.
Lakhs of state government employees went on the roads seeking restoration of the OPS, a defined pension scheme offering 50 per cent of the last drawn salary, hampering functioning of various services and facilities at hospitals.
Apart from OPS, employees have 17 other demands which include no privatisation of government departments, retirement age be made 60 years from the current 58 years, those working on contractual basis be made permanent and filling of empty posts, among others.
