General Asim Munir, the head of the army, asked parliamentarians on Friday to concentrate on “our Pakistan” rather than discussing “Naya” or “Purana” Pakistan and assured them of the army’s complete support as they work to advance the nation’s prosperity.
His comments come days after the country chose to begin a new campaign against extremists and as the military’s senior brass informed the parliamentarians on the current security situation.
The “present challenges of National Security” were on the agenda of the closed-door meeting, according to a National Assembly Secretariat.
Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Speaker of the National Assembly, welcomed General Munir and his top officers to Parliament for the briefing.
After attending the briefing, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari informed the media that the session’s main emphasis was national security.
The briefing, which was held after the top civil and military leadership last week reiterated their commitment to countering terrorism threats and launching a new operation against militants in response to an increase in attacks by the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, was followed by no statement.
According to the report, General Munir asked parliamentarians to concentrate on “our Pakistan” rather than the argument over whether Pakistan is “new” or “old” during the briefing.
Imran Khan, the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, used the phrase “Naya Pakistan” after he took office in 2018.
The Army commander said, “Pakistan has no shortage of resources and personnel.” He added that the elected officials of the people should decide the country’s course, and the Army will completely back them on their path to the success and growth of Pakistan.
The National Assembly members applauded when the army leader spoke, according to reports.
The Pakistani people are the “centre of gravity,” the army commander said, and their views are reflected in both the Pakistani Constitution and the Parliament.
He insisted that “the Constitution and the Parliament are the means through which the people express their viewpoint.”
Because to the sacrifices made by troops, according to the Army commander, there are no longer any off-limits locations in Pakistan.
He said that the only course open to terrorists is to submit to the state’s authority.
According to General Munir, the security forces are ready to maintain peace in the nation and regularly carry out operations based on information to this end.
The nation’s law enforcement organizations, including the army, rangers, and police, were honored earlier in the meeting by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for their efforts in the struggle against terrorism.
The premier reportedly made reference to the four-year term of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf administration when he remarked, “Peace was restored by the enormous sacrifices of our martyrs, and this hard work was squandered in four years.”
Legislators from the tribal area, which had been severely impacted by the struggle against the extremists, demanded the briefing.
National security is now threatened by the TTP.
One of the deadliest months since July 2018 was January 2023, according to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, a research tank with offices in Islamabad, when 134 people died in at least 44 terrorist assaults throughout the nation.
