On Sunday, young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa and American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana drew the second game of their FIDE World Cup semifinal, forcing a tie-break.
The two-match classical series between the 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa and Caruana ended in a draw. To determine who progresses to the final match against Magnus Carlsen, the No. 1 player in the world, the two players will compete in a tie-break on Monday.
The world No. 3 Caruana and Praggnanandhaa match on Sunday resulted in a draw after 47 moves.
Carlsen, who had won the first game on Saturday, agreed to a draw with Nijat Abasov of Azerbaijan after 74 moves to secure his place in the championship match.
The superstar from Norway made it to the World Cup final for the first time this year.
Teenage chess prodigy Praggnanandhaa, from Chennai, is just the second Indian, after the famous Viswanathan Anand, to ever get to the World Cup semifinals. He will also compete in the Candidates event the following year.
The top three finishers in the competition advance to the Candidates event in 2024 to choose Ding Liren’s rival.
