The Railway Board has directed all zonal heads to assess the accommodations made for general class passengers and make sure they have access to the bare necessities during this busy summer period.
The general managers (GMs) of all zones were directed to examine general seating (GS) coaches by the end of the month in a letter from Jaya Varma Sinha, member (operations and business development), dated June 19. Both the front and back ends of trains are equipped with GS carriages.
The letter said that until the end of the month, “the passenger rush in trains, especially in GS coaches, should be reviewed on a daily basis and necessary corrective actions be taAlso requested from the zones is the deployment of onboard housekeeping (OBHS) personnel within the coaches.
“Deployment of OBHS staff in GS coaches with territorial jurisdiction may be examined such that they travel in GS coaches between two stopping stations and return by another train in a link,” the letter said.
“During stops, it should be assured that railway side vending carts with affordable meals and water pouches are deployed in front of GS carriages. At all stops, it was recommended that drinking water booths be provided where the GS coaches halt on the platform.
