The Rajya Sabha’s business was suspended for the day due to the government’s demand that Congressman Rahul Gandhi retract his statements on democracy.
The topic would be discussed in a meeting of floor leaders, according to chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.
After an earlier break, the Upper House reconvened at 2 pm, and Union Minister and Leader of the House Piyush Goyal reaffirmed the government’s position that Gandhi must retract his statements.
Gandhi recently said during a visit to the UK that the institutions of Indian democracy were subject to a “brutal onslaught” and were being attacked on a large scale. “We have looked at the circumstance. The provisions of the Constitution, the guidelines we have created, the instructions given by previous chairman, “said Dhankhar.
He said that the Lok Sabha’s orders had also been taken into consideration.
“We are meeting with the floor leaders today at 2:30, and I am certain you will hear from me as soon as possible, either during the day or tomorrow (Wednesday),” Dhankhar said.
Rajya Sabha proceedings earlier in the day were postponed till 2 p.m. due to opposition members’ outrage at the government’s demand that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi apologize for his comments on democracy.
In the Upper House, where MPs had previously crossed party lines to celebrate India’s Oscar winners, there were raucous scenes when Piyush Goyal, the Leader of the House and Union Minister, accused Gandhi of insulting the Parliament and other fundamental institutions and demanded an apology.
