The performance of Team India has been very volatile in the last two years. Team India has had to face defeat on 9 big occasions since being eliminated from the group stage of the T20 World Cup in October 2021. The special thing is that on five of these 9 occasions, the captain was Rohit Sharma. Till Rohit Sharma did not become the full-time captain, his record was excellent. In IPL too, he had made his team Mumbai Indians champions five times. But there is a lot of difference between IPL and International cricket, but perhaps the Indian Cricket Board has made IPL a big standard of selection in Team India for the last few years.
Leave aside the heights to which Team India was expected to be taken under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, the team is slowly coming to the floor in all formats. The team loses the ODI series at home. Bangladesh also defeats the team in the ODI series. The team’s batsmen fail on the home spin track. All these flaws have started coming out in the last few months. The biggest thing was that the team was out of the Super Four even in the Asia Cup 2022. The last two years have been very sad for Indian cricket fans.
India has disappointed on these 9 occasions since 2021 –
Out of group stage of T20 World Cup 2021 (Captain- Virat Kohli)
Test series defeat in South Africa (Captain – Virat Kohli, KL Rahul)
Defeated in ODI series in South Africa (Captain – KL Rahul)
Lost the fifth Test in England to draw the series (Captain- Jasprit Bumrah)
Did not even reach the final of Asia Cup 2022 (Captain- Rohit Sharma)
Defeated by 10 wickets in the semi-finals of T20 World Cup 2022 (Captain- Rohit Sharma)
Defeated in ODI series in Bangladesh (Captain- Rohit Sharma)
Lost the ODI series against Australia at home (Captain- Rohit Sharma)
Embarrassing defeat in WTC Final 2023 (Captain- Rohit Sharma)
Rohit Sharma’s captaincy record
Rohit Sharma has played seven Test matches so far as captain, out of which Team India won 4 and lost two. While one match ended in a draw. In ODIs, he captained 26 matches, out of which the team won 19 times and in T20 Internationals, he led Team India to victory 39 times out of 51. Rohit became the full-time captain in the year 2022. Before that, since 2017, he had been captaining Team India on different occasions. He won big tournaments team like Nidahas Trophy, the 2018 Asia Cup. Everyone thought that he would do well as a full-time captain, but the results are there for all to see. His performance has also deteriorated during this period. His fitness, his lazy batting, everything is questioned. It would not be wrong to say that till the 2023 World Cup, his captaincy will continue to be under threat.
