Kolhapur is gearing up for the Shiva Rajyabhishek ceremony on June 6, an auspicious event celebrated annually to honor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. However, this year’s ceremony has become a subject of controversy and confusion. Preparations are in full swing at Fort Raigad, where the ceremony will be held in the presence of Sambhaji Raje Chhatrapati. Additionally, for the first time, the new palace in Kolhapur will host the Shiva Rajyabhishek ceremony with the presence of Shahu Maharaj Chhatrapati and Malojiraje Chhatrapati.
Traditionally, the coronation ceremony takes place at Raigad fort, where thousands of devotees gather to worship Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This year, the ceremony will also be conducted in Kolhapur, leading to some speculation and questions raised by historians. It has been alleged that the government is celebrating the 350th coronation ceremony a year in advance to coincide with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024. The All India Shivrajyabhishek Mahotsav Samiti, led by Sambhaji Raje Chhatrapati, is also organizing the 350th Shivrajyabhishek ceremony.
However, there is a discrepancy in the leaflet mentioning the coronation ceremony at the new palace as the 349th. This has further fueled the debate surrounding the exact nature and significance of this year’s coronation ceremony of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. As a result, questions have started to emerge, leaving historians and the public pondering over the authenticity and timing of the event. Despite the controversy, the preparations for the ceremony are progressing, and notable dignitaries, including Shrimant Shahu Maharaj Chhatrapati, Yagyseniraje Chhatrapati Maharanisaheb, Malojiraje Chhatrapati, and other members of the royal family, are expected to attend the ceremony at the new palace in Kolhapur.
