Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar got “death threats” on social media. The party claimed this on Friday. A senior police officer told that taking cognizance of the matter, the Mumbai Police is registering an FIR. A delegation of NCP workers led by Pawar’s daughter and Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule met Mumbai Police Chief Vivek Phansalkar and demanded action.
Regarding the threat received by Sharad Pawar, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde said, “The government has taken serious note of the threat received by senior leader Sharad Pawar on Twitter and I have personally spoken to senior police officers. The matter is being taken seriously. Have given instructions to investigate. Sharad Pawar is a senior leader and we all respect him. Full care will be taken of his security. Instructions have been given to the police to increase security if needed.”
NCP leaders told the police that Pawar (82) received a message on Facebook which read, “He too (Narendra) will meet the fate of Dabholkar.” On August 20, 2013, Narendra Dabholkar, who fought against superstition, was shot dead by unknown bike-borne assailants during his morning walk in Pune. Supriya Sule shared pictures of the threatening message with the police.
A senior police officer said that they have been informed about the threats received by the NCP chief on social media platforms. He said, “We are looking into it. We have started the investigation.”
The official said that the NCP had sent representatives to lodge the complaint. “The police is registering an FIR in this regard at the South Zone Cyber Police Station,” he said.
