As a result of Monday’s 2-2 tie between East Bengal FC and Aizawl FC in Group B action at the Payyanad Stadium, East Bengal FC was eliminated from the Hero Super Cup.
The Red and Golds took the lead thanks to goals from Naorem Mahesh Singh and Sumeet Passi, but two goals from Aizawl FC in a matter of seconds eliminated the Kolkata club from the tournament.
In the other game of the day, Odisha FC defeated Hyderabad FC 2-1 after coming from behind to win. This victory advanced them to the semifinals.
Odisha FC made sure they stayed undefeated in Group B and ended with seven points after two wins and one draw with to goals from Diego Mauricio and Victor Rodriguez in the second half.
Early in the game, Hyderabad FC took the lead thanks to a goal from Javier Siverio. Stephen Constantine, the head coach of East Bengal FC, made a number of changes to the starting lineup, perhaps in an effort to secure a decisive victory in their last group match. On the squad sheet for East Bengal, Sumeet Passi, Tuhin Das, and Charalambos Kyriacou were all included.
Throughout the bulk of the game, Naorem Mahesh Singh led East Bengal’s assault, and it was he who scored the game’s first goal in the 17th minute.
Mahesh was well set up by Cleiton Silva to cut inside the box and cross the ball to the middle of the area. But, his cross took a nasty deflection and went into the Aizawl goal.
Midfielder Mobashir Rahman then had a fantastic chance to increase the advantage. He picked up a loose ball just beyond the box’s edge and attempted to fire, but his attempt went over the crossbar.
East Bengal extended their advantage after the first period. Sumeet Passi rose highest to head a VP Suhair cross into an open goal after Aizawl FC goalkeeper Vanlalhriatpuia made a mistake with his angles while attempting to push the ball aside.
A rout seemed imminent at the moment. Yet just before the break, Aizawl scored a goal against the flow of the game.
Akito Saito, a defender, moved upfield before David Lalhlansanga received a through ball from him. David took advantage of the opportunity and fired from a tight angle. The original shot was saved by Kamaljit, but the rebound dropped directly to Lalhruaitluanga, who maintained his cool to score.
As if it weren’t enough, Aizawl equalized just after the break thanks to a goal from David.
