Sylvester daCunha, the legendary ‘Amul Girl’ creator, passed away on Tuesday night in Mumbai. To express his condolences on daCunha’s passing, former Amul MD and current Indian Dairy Association President RS Sodhi posted a tearful image of the Amul Girl.
The Amul dairy brand is owned by Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), and Jayen Mehta, the organization’s managing director, corroborated the information by adding,
I’m very sorry to tell you that Shri Sylvester daCunha, Chairman of daCunha Communications, passed away suddenly yesterday night in Mumbai. a legend in Indian advertising who has been connected to Amul since the 1960s. The Amul family shares in your sorrow over this tragic loss.
In 1966, Sylvester daCunha and his wife Nisha created the renowned “Utterly Butterly” campaign for Amul, which introduced the world to the adorable “Amul Girl.” With its clever and relevant ideas, this ad was an immediate success and continues to enthral people today.
At the Advertising and Sales Promotion Company, daCunha served as the manager. I first got the idea in 1966 to put a mascot in front of moms and kids. ‘Purely the Best,’ Amul Butter’s initial slogan, needs to be replaced with something catchier. Sylvester daCunha added the term “Butterly” to Nisha daCunha’s original phrase, “Utterly Amul,” to create the now-famous slogan, “Utterly Butterly Amul.”
