During a busy day in Texas, Frances Tiafoe overcame Thomas Etcheverry 7-6 (7/1), 7-6 (8/6) to win the ATP clay court championship in Houston.
Because to the weather delays earlier in the week, the American, who was playing in his first ATP event as the top seed, needed to win twice on Sunday to claim the title.
He said he was eager for the task after defeating Gijs Brouwer 6-4, 6-1 in the semi-final match.
“I’m powered by adrenaline,” “After defeating Brouwer, Tiafoe addressed the fans. “I’m pleased because I’m on a mission.”
On Sunday night, the task had been completed as Tiafoe won his second ATP championship, his first since Delray Beach in 2018.
In his subsequent four finals appearances, he had failed to win.
Tiafoe really had to win four games in two days due to the wet week, playing his first two games of the week on Saturday.
He didn’t lose a set, and the only time he was broken was while he was serving for the match against Etcheverry in the second set at 5-4.
On his second match point, he delivered his 12th ace of the match to secure the win after falling down 1-3 and 3-5 in the tiebreaker.
