Thousands of people living in coastal towns and small islands have left their homes and moved to safer places as cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ is expected to reach Pakistan. Strong winds, rain and high waves have signaled the arrival of Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’. ‘Biparjoy’ means disaster in Bengali language. It has been classified as an ‘extremely severe cyclonic storm’. It is expected to reach here with strong winds of 140 to 150 kmph.
The wind speed can reach up to 170 kilometers per hour. As per the latest forecast, the cyclone is likely to continue moving north then recurve east and land between KT Bunder in Thatta district and Gujarat coast of India. According to weather experts, its effect can be seen in Thatta, Badin, Sajwal, Tharparkar, Karachi, Mirpur Khas, Umarkot, Hyderabad, Ormara, Tanda Allahya and Tando Mohammad Khan.
According to information shared by the Sindh Chief Minister’s Office, out of 71,380 people living in seven talukas (as estimated by the government) in three districts, 56,985 were evacuated till Tuesday evening. 37 relief camps have been set up at various places including government schools and colleges. According to the Pakistan Navy, the navy has rescued 700 people from various villages in Shah Bunder and 64 fishermen have been rescued from the sea.
