A toy train on its way to Neral from the popular Matheran hill station in Maharashtra derailed. However, there was no injury to any passenger. Railway officials informed about this on Tuesday. The incident took place around 5.30 pm on Saturday when a wheel of the engine of the train derailed near Jumma Patti station, about 95 km from Mumbai, officials said.
Officials said that there were 90 to 95 passengers in the toy train that left Matheran at around 4 pm on Saturday. A railway spokesperson said there was no injury to any passenger. The passengers immediately deboarded the train and boarded cabs to reach their destinations, he said. According to railway officials, the train was brought back on track at around 9 pm and returned to Neral station at the foothills of the Matheran hills by 10.30 pm. Due to this incident, the last train from Neral to Matheran was canceled and the fare of the passengers of both the trains was refunded, he said.
The spokesperson said that the toy train moves at a slow speed and sometimes in case of derailment, the support staff traveling along with the train pick them up and put them back on the tracks. A senior railway official said that the operation of the toy train between Neral and Matheran will remain suspended during the monsoon. The Neral-Matheran toy train is more than 100 years old. It is one of the few mountain railways (section) in India. The 21 km long Neral-Matheran narrow gauge track passes through the picturesque gorge of the hill station.
