According to authorities on Friday, the Jaipur Greater Municipal Corporation has granted a birth certificate to a transgender person in a first of its type.
Noor Shekhawat of Jaipur received the state’s first transgender birth certificate on Wednesday from Bhanwarlal Bairwa, Director of the Economic and Statistics Department and Chief Registrar (Births and Deaths), they said.
According to Bhairwa, the birth records of transgender people will now be accessible on the corporation’s webpage alongside the records of men and females.
Bhairwa said that a campaign would be started to raise awareness and entice transgender people to get their birth certificates.
At the time of his birth, Shekhawat’s gender was recorded as “male,” he continued.
The government will now be able to keep track of transgender people’s records alongside those of handicapped people, men, and women, according to Shekhawat, a transgender activist who graduated from a high school with an English medium and now directs a nonprofit organization for the transgender community.
Shekhawat now intends to lobby government officials to provide employment chances and career preferences to the transgender community.
