As news reports revealed the monitoring of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s communications, the UN officially conveyed its “alarm” to the US, his spokesperson said on Tuesday, criticizing activities “inconsistent with (US) duties.”
“The UN publicly conveyed its worry over recent claims that the US government had spied on and interfered with the communications of the Secretary-General and other top UN officials, “Stephane Dujarric, a spokesperson, said.
According to Dujarric, such measures “are incompatible with the (US) commitments… listed in the UN charter and the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations.”
According to the Washington Post, which cited private Military papers, the US has eavesdropped on at least four of Guterres’ discussions with other UN officials, including those regarding Ukraine.
A 21-year-old airman was charged last week by US authorities for allegedly leaking hundreds of classified American papers on the conflict in Ukraine as well as intelligence reports on other regions of the globe.
