Several students objected to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which sparked a violent debate on Monday at Gauhati University in Assam, organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The police stated they had to step in to maintain order.
At least six pupils were hurt in fighting between themselves, according to the police, following a disagreement. After receiving initial care, the pupils were released from the hospital due to their mild injuries, according to the police.
At their “State Student Leaders Conference,” the ABVP hosted a discussion on Monday at Gauhati University’s Birinchi Kumar Barua Auditorium. The ABVP claims several students initially tried to obstruct the debate and attacked the organisers.
Students who were demonstrating, meanwhile, said that ABVP members were making disparaging statements and singled out particular societal groups. One student commented, “Students’ politics have certain limits because this is an educational institution.”
The university administration declared they would look into the situation and take appropriate action.
The national government released the CAA regulations on March 11 and talked about the significance and effects of the law, which is taking place all over Assam.
The bill, which Parliament passed in December 2019, allows undocumented Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014, to become citizens.
