When Mumbai Indians won the first Women’s Premier League 2023 on Sunday, captain Harmanpreet Kaur described it as a “dream.” (Also in Cricket)
To win the summit match by seven wickets, MI initially held Delhi Capitals to 131 for nine before surpassing the goal with three balls remaining.
“We had been looking forward to this for so long, and it has been wonderful. This was loved by everybody in the changing room. For everyone here, it seems like a dream “At the post-match presentation, Harmanpreet remarked.
“So many people had been wondering when WPL will arrive, and now it has, and we are very glad and proud of it.”
MI needed 132 to win and were 23 for 2 in the fourth over when Nat Sciver-Brunt hit a 55-ball 60 to get them there.
“We had to go there and express, in my opinion, since we had a deep hitting lineup. Extremely pleased with everyone’s performance. Keeping a positive attitude is crucial, and we were fortunate to have full tosses go in our favour “added the MI captain.
“We are all in for a treat at this particular moment, and after much anticipation, I can finally say that I have experienced victory.
“We often speak about being optimistic, and we truly carried through our goals, which is why I’m here today,”
After putting up a subpar performance at the plate, DC captain Meg Lanning acknowledged that her team didn’t have enough points on the board.
“We would have wanted to win, but MI deserves all the credit. They deserve it, but all praise for our team’s work. Despite not playing our best, this competition has proved that you can persevere until the very end because you never know what could happen “added Lanning, who led all batters in the competition with 345 runs scored.
“The bowlers put out an excellent effort. In the first 10 overs, we played well and gained early wickets, but Harmanpreet and Sciver-Brunt snatched the game away from us because of their excellent batting.”
It was “extremely amazing” to be able to bring the squad home, according to Nat Sciver-Brunt, who received Player of the Match honours.
“I’m glad I was able to persevere when the going got tough. Harman and Melie relieved the strain I was under as I was attempting to become pretty harsh. I was certain we would succeed if I persisted until the finish.
“We conceded too many runs in the last three to four overs, but it kept the game exciting. (Winning the trophy) is a really unique occasion, especially when shared with a great group of ladies and the Mumbai Indians.”
Hayley Matthews, another MI player who was honoured as the game’s most valuable player after hitting 271 runs and grabbing 16 wickets, expressed her happiness at being able to help the team with both the bat and the ball.
“The circumstances aid my off-spin as I continuously work to become better. It’s important to reclaim the trophy, but winning with the Mumbai Indians makes me happier.”
