One of the most polluted cities in the world is Delhi, and every year from November onwards, India has an increase in pollution days. Simply put, the concentration of 2.5-micron hazardous particulate matter in the air is what makes up the air quality index.
Tuesday’s second straight day saw reduced wind speeds and an increase in humidity, which finally produced a stifling day with a thick layer of pollution encircling several areas of the city, according to experts.
MUMBAI
Despite the foggy cityscape, which was mostly brought on by car emissions, as well as the residual smoke and dust from slums and industrial districts, the city’s total air pollution level stayed at a mild 113.
This was just marginally better than the Munday reading of 115, which was eclipsed by Delhi’s record of 165.
According to a report,’very bad’ air quality indexes were recorded in the suburbs of Andheri (346), Mazagaon (317), and Navi Mumbai (317) compared to the previous day.
Chembur and Malad, in contrast, had ‘bad’ AQI levels, while BKC, Borivali, Worli, Bhandup, and Colaba fell into the moderate range.
DELHI
Delhi’s peak temperature on Tuesday was 26.2 degrees Celsius, seven degrees below average and the lowest recorded for this year’s October, according to meteorological department authorities. The lowest temperature in the nation’s capital dropped due to overnight rains and was 17.2 degrees Celsius in the morning, two degrees below average.
Parts of the nation’s capital were pounded by strong winds and rain on Monday night. The city had 5 mm of rain between 8.30 am on Monday to 8:30 am on Tuesday, according to statistics from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Tuesday morning at 8:30 am, the humidity was 80%; by 5:30 pm, it had decreased to 68%.
At 9 am, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was 123, placing it in the moderate category. By 8 pm, it had improved to 88 (‘acceptable’). An AQI of 0 to 50 is regarded to be acceptable, 101 to 200 satisfactory, 201-300 bad, 301 to 400 extremely poor, and 401 to 500 severe. An AQI of 500 or more is considered severe plus. The remainder of the day was expected to be overcast, according to the weather service.
The highest temperature on Monday was 30.5 degrees Celsius, which is three degrees below the seasonal normal.
While the AQI between zero and 50 is regarded as “good,” 51 and 100 as “satisfactory,” and between 101 and 200 as “moderate,” an AQI between 201 and 300 is deemed “poor,” 301–400 as “very poor,” and 401–500 as “severe.”
