The primary suspect in the suspected gang rape of a young girl in the Dhing, Assam, area has been found dead, according to police.
According to authorities on Saturday morning, Tafazul Islam, the main accused in the case, allegedly broke free from police custody, plunged into a pond, and perished. Swapnaneel Deka, the Superintendent of Police for the Nagaon district, revealed over the phone with ANI that Tafazul Islam was detained by police on Friday in relation to the crime.
“The primary accused attempted to escape and dove into a nearby pond when a police team brought him to the scene of the crime last night for an inquiry. During a search operation, our police officers found his body in the pond this morning with the assistance of the SDRF team, he added.
The top police official stated that efforts are in progress to apprehend the remaining two suspects.
On August 22, in the evening, a 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three individuals in the Dhing neighbourhood as she was on her way home from tuition classes.
Locals and other organisations in the Dhing area staged large-scale protests in response to the tragedy, demanding that the perpetrators face severe consequences.
On Friday, GP Singh, the director general of police for Assam, visited the scene, spoke with senior police officers, and met the victim’s relatives.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the event on Friday, stating, “We need to take prompt action when there is any atrocity against women.”
Sarma told the media, “I would like to say just one thing.” We must respond quickly in cases of violence against women. However, the public ought to be aware that the government is acting strictly. People become enraged when they perceive a lack of action from the government. When anything like this happens, the government ought to act extremely strongly. People in Bengal became enraged because the government failed to take action.
He went on to say that “we are seeing a specific community of people indulging in criminal activities” following this year’s Lok Sabha elections.
He went on, “The people who caused the incident at Dhing, which involved a minor Hindu, will face consequences.” Locals reportedly discovered the girl by the side of the road in a semi-conscious state, and they took her right away to a hospital.
