After the pipeline ruptured, water flowed out in all directions, striking the glass facade of a two-story structure at the Bora Bora restaurant intersection and stabbing pedestrians and drivers in the head. The maintenance division of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was tasked with making the repairs right away. A 600mm diameter pipeline inlet at Pali Hill reservoir that feeds water to the entire H-West was disrupted on Monday by excavation work being done in a stormwater drain (SWD) on Waterfield Road in Bandra West. This caused the morning and afternoon supplies in Bandra, Santacruz, and Khar to be affected.
After the pipeline ruptured, water flowed out in all directions, striking the glass facade of a two-story structure at the Bora Bora restaurant intersection and stabbing pedestrians and drivers in the head. The maintenance division of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was assigned the task of performing the repairs right away.
Although the rupture interrupted the water supply from 10:45 am (when the pipe burst) to 2 pm, the next delivery at 5.30 pm at Khar Danda will be restored to normal, a civic official from the ward’s waterworks department told HT in the afternoon. The accident, according to the local official, happened as workers from the SWD department dug up the Waterfield Road to find a cross drainage. “We discovered a rusted intake that is 60 years old, and the plates are paper thin. It’s extremely brittle. Under normal conditions, the pipeline does not rupture when a JCB excavator comes into touch with it. However, due to the pipeline’s age and condition, the rupture was only triggered by a mild touch, he claimed.
From the moment of the pipe burst until 2pm, supply at Sherley Rajan Road, Chimbai Village, Varoda Road, Manuel Gonzales Road area, Perry Road, and Navin Kantwadi was interrupted. BMC had warned residents to use water carefully during this time because renovations were anticipated to be finished in eight to ten hours. Dewatering and charging were included in the repairs. Priority was given to using the western suburbs’ maintenance crew.
“We repaired the damaged area, but the old pipeline will be replaced in six months. For this, a tender for 10 crore has been issued, according to the municipal official.
