After learning that the Maharashtra government has given its approval for the CBI’s investigation into the alleged lynching of three individuals in the Palghar area in April 2020, the Supreme Court decided to schedule the cases for hearing on Monday. A lawyer for one of the petitioners informed a bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices PS Narasimha, and JB Pardiwala that the state government has also consented for a CBI investigation. The attorney brought up the subject and said that the case may be heard and decided on either Friday or Monday.
It will be listed, the bench said. The Maharashtra government had previously changed its mind and informed the Supreme Court that it was prepared to turn over the probe into the alleged lynching of three individuals, including two seers, to the CBI. The state government had previously informed the supreme court that the Maharashtra Police had disciplined “delinquent” personnel for failing to perform their responsibilities in the alleged lynching event and asked that the petitions calling for a CBI investigation be dismissed. The affidavit was submitted in response to a number of petitions, including one from the deceased’s kin and seers of Shri Panch Dashban Juna Akhara.
In their argument, they claimed that the state police’s inquiry was prejudiced. Advocates Shashank Shekhar Jha and Ghanshyam Upadhyay submitted the other arguments. When their vehicle was stopped and they were allegedly attacked and killed by a mob in Gadchinchile village on the night of April 16, 2020, in the presence of police, the three residents of Kandivali in Mumbai were en route to attend a funeral in Surat in Gujarat during the COVID-19-induced nationwide lockdown. The fatalities were named as Nilesh Telgade, 30, the driver of the car, Chikne Maharaj Kalpavrukshagiri, 70, and Sushil Giri Maharaj, 35.
