IIT Bombay Students and Alumni Request FIR In Dalit Student’s Death
At least two students collectives of the Indian Institute of Technology of Bombay have requested Maharashtra Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis to direct the police to file an FIR in the death of Darshan Solanki, the first year student who allegedly committed suicide.
The state government has already created a special investigation team headed by a senior police officer to investigate the case.
In an e-mail-cum-letter written to Fadnavis on Tuesday, the students groups asserted the SIT investigation is based on the Accidental Death Report registered by the police, and the refusal of the SIT to set their investigation on FIR is a failure to see the rights of the family.
Solanki was a first year B Tech course who hailed from Ahmedabad in Gujarat who allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the seventh floor of a hostel building located on the campus on February 12.
