Amar Kumar Bauri, a Chandankyari MLA, has been chosen by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to serve as the party’s legislative leader in the Jharkhand Assembly.
Babulal Marandi, the state BJP president and a former chief minister of Jharkhand, was overwhelmingly chosen on February 24, 2020, to head the BJP Legislative Party, but Speaker Rabindranath Mahto did not grant him LoP status because of an anti-defection petition that was still pending in the Speaker’s court. On August 30, Mahto adjourned the case’s hearings and held off on making a decision.
I was designated as an observer for the selection process for the position of leader of the Jharkhand State BJP Legislative Party by BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda. He received the report we gave him. Amar Kumar Bauri, the Legislative Party’s leader, and Jai Prakash Patel, its whip, have received his approval after deliberation, according to a letter Union Minister Ashiwini Kumar Choubey addressed to Marandi on Sunday.
Choubey previously met with party officials and members in July as an observer to discuss the choice of the BJP’s new leader in the Jharkhand Assembly.
“I went to the state BJP office in Ranchi and held a meeting with MLAs and I also took the opinion of each one separately,” said Choubey.
Marandi succeeded Rajya Sabha MP Deepak Prakash as president of the Jharkhand BJP in July.
Marandi cannot be appointed the head of the opposition in the legislature since a defection case against him has not yet been resolved, the Jharkhand administration had informed the high court.
Attorney Kapil Sibal testified on behalf of the state government, claiming that Marandi had run for assembly in 2019 as a member of the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik), and after winning, had merged his organization with the BJP.
Marandi, a former Union minister as well, united his Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) with the BJP in Ranchi on February 17, 2020, in front of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. On February 24 of the same year, he was overwhelmingly chosen to serve as the BJP Legislative Party’s leader.
Then, Speaker Rabindranath Mahto started legal action against him on his own initiative under the anti-defection statute. In August 2022, he concluded the hearing and reserved the verdict.
The governing UPA has 47 MLAs in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly: JMM 29, Congress 17, and RJD 1. Three from the AJSU Party and 26 from the BJP. Aside from the two Independents, the NCP and CPI (ML) each have one legislator.
