Before the Parliamentary Standing Committee meets to examine the hotly debated Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on July 3, the Congress Parliamentary Strategy Group will meet today to discuss the party’s position on the topic. The gathering will take place at Sonia Gandhi’s home in New Delhi, the former leader of the Congress.
On July 3, the BJP Rajya Sabha MP-led Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice would convene a hearing to hear the opinions of 31 MPs and other committee members about UCC.
Over the Uniform Civil Code, Congress criticises the BJP.
Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong case for adopting the single code, the Congress attacked the BJP on Friday on the topic of the Uniform Civil Code, stating that it tries to separate people and propagate intolerance.
Congress spokeswoman Meem Afzal said that the “UCC is not the agenda, rather the agenda is to divide the people of the country” and that this is not a UCC but a “DCC – Dividing Civil Code” that tries to divide the politics of the nation.
The problem is to generate animosity among people and split politics. Even the prime minister is referring to a certain group of individuals, yet this problem does not just affect that group. Every group, every religion, and every language is affected by this. It should be acceptable to everyone if you are performing any job, he said.
Manish Tewari, a spokesman for the Congress, said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is not yet legislation and that, in his interpretation of the law, “review of personal laws means review of existing personal laws.”
“To put UCC under the same rubric of existing laws may be or is a bit of a stretch,” he said.
The majority of nations have a universal civil code that applies to all of their residents.
Ending religious prejudice and ensuring equal rights for all citizens are the primary goals of UCC.
It’s time to implement UCC.
