Army and paramilitary personnel allegedly raced to the state after reports of further violence and arson emerged from Imphal, and a curfew has once again been enforced.
According to a formal order issued on Sunday, the Manipur government has also extended the ban on internet services across the state for an additional five days in an effort to stop the propagation of hate speech and uphold peace in the midst of reports of occasional acts of violence.
Conflicts that followed a “Tribal Solidarity March” organized in the hill areas to oppose the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) classification led to the first imposition of the ban on May 5.
The commissioner of the state government’s home department signed an order on Sunday that stated there was concern that anti-social elements might use social media to disseminate hate speech, images, and videos that could seriously affect law and order.
