Google said on Thursday that it would start producing its premium Pixel smartphones in India. The firm also unveiled a number of projects and partnerships that largely drew on its cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology and its well-liked payments platform.
At the company’s annual Google for India event, new security measures targeting at the kind of online financial fraud that is rampant here were also announced, along with charitable awards for work on spreading awareness of disinformation.
However, the company’s choice to participate in the government’s Make in India project was the subject of the headline announcement.
“We continue to get encouraging feedback from our partners and our expanding Pixel family, and we are humbled by how India has embraced our constant smartphone advances. According to Rick Osterloh, senior vice president of devices and services, “When we started our hardware business, we made a commitment to building and investing for the long term, and our plan to manufacture in India is an early step in the long journey of expanding our device production capacity and helping meet the country’s growing demand for Pixel smartphones.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, the union minister for electronics and technology, said the move was “good for Google and good for India” and added that it was a reflection of the government initiatives that had accelerated electronics production.
Osterloh stated that the business was “proud to be part of the government’s make in India” initiative while stating that it was working with both domestic and foreign manufacturers in India to create Pixel smartphones locally.
The second American tech giant’s flagship phone to be produced in India is Google’s Pixel. The iPhone 15 was built in India, as Apple stated in August, and for the first time, it was available in shops alongside models made in other manufacturing hotspots like China on the day of introduction.
The firm, which manages one of the most popular payment applications via Google Pay and claims that the program has 350 million users, also announced five partnerships with financial institutions for lending options, including to small companies and for $15,000 microloans.
In order to promote responsible credit, Google is working. Ambarish Kenghe, vice president of Google Pay, said, “We are working with trusted partners to enable broader, easier, and responsible access to credit.
India, where the majority of smartphones are powered by Google’s Android environment, is one of its main growth markets.
Other significant projects included partnerships with Axis My India to provide a bilingual mobile application named “A” for citizen information services and with the government-run e-marketplace ONDC to link farmer producer organizations, such as Nabard, with merchants.
The A app will get help from Google’s AI-related service, which will also be used to enhance the usage of its flagship Search product, as part of the initiatives to make lending simpler.
More videos and photos will be included in overviews for the Search and Search Generative Experiences in India, which will aid in assisting users in discovering new locations and activities. The latter is the AI-enabled version of Google’s self-titled online search engine.
According to Sanjay Gupta, country manager and vice president, Google India, “We, at Google, are very committed to being a trusted, responsible, and valued partner in India’s digital transformation journey and in working with the government to drive innovation, improve economic growth, enhance the nation’s security, and protect the privacy and safety of the millions of Indians who choose our products and services.”
