According to authorities, the Palghar district of Maharashtra’s train bridge connecting Vaitarna and Safale stations is under danger due to unlawful dredging of river sand.
Two people have just been charged with a crime at the Mandvi police station for unlawful sand mining under the Indian Criminal Code, the Environment Protection Act, and Section 151 of the Railways Act (Damage to or destruction of certain railroad facilities).
According to a police official, no arrests have been made thus far.
In close proximity to Virar on the western line of the Mumbai suburban network are the railway stations of Vaitarna and Saphale.
“On Monday, as the bridge was being inspected, authorities discovered a suction pump drawing sand from the Vaitarna river. The pump was discovered nearby placed on a boat. Sand was being gathered and piled up at the location, “said he.
The boat and the suction pump were destroyed by police.
“The unlawful dredging of sand has harmed the environment and rendered the railway bridge over the Vaitarna river hazardous, “said in the FIR.
