Diamond trader Mehul Choksi has fled India, but his troubles are not ending. The troubles of diamond merchant Mehul Choksi have increased once again. Actually, Choksi had filed a petition in the Bombay High Court against the Fugitive Economic Offender (FEO) action being taken against him, which has now been rejected by the court. The way has now been cleared for the central investigating agencies to start the process. During this time, Bombay High Court said that four cases have come before it in this regard which have been dismissed.
The Bombay High Court, while hearing the case against the Enforcement Directorate’s action, had this month reserved its order on four petitions. Let us tell you that both Mehul Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are diamond traders. Both of them have committed a scam worth lakhs of crores, after which both Modi and Choksi have been included in the FEO list. Choksi had filed an appeal in the High Court to stop the action being taken under this. According to this law of 2018, only that person can be declared FEO, who is accused of fraud of more than Rs 100 crore. Also, the accused may have left the country or may not be ready to return to the country.
Let us tell you that Mehul Choksi is accused of defrauding Punjab National Bank (PNB) of Rs 14,500 crore. In January 2020, the High Court had stayed the final order being passed by the special court proceedings. In August this year, the ED moved the High Court to review the stay and claimed that Choksi had already fled the country. ED lawyer Hiten Venegaonkar argued that Choksi is an accused under the PMLA Act. Prosecution against him is pending due to the stay order of the High Court.
