The State President of the Maharashtra Congress, Nana Patole, announced that a comprehensive assessment of 41 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state has been conducted, while a separate review of six constituencies in Mumbai and the Chandrapur seat will be carried out. The allocation of seats will be discussed during the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) meeting, scheduled for June 3.
Maharashtra, with a total of 48 seats in the Lok Sabha, is crucial in the upcoming elections. Mr. Patole expressed his party’s preparedness and determination to contest the 2024 polls with great enthusiasm, aiming to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party.
“The review of 41 Lok Sabha constituencies (out of the total 48) has been completed. The review of Chandrapur and six constituencies in Mumbai will be conducted separately. The discussions have been positive, and Congress workers aspire for the party to contest the maximum number of constituencies,” stated Mr. Patole during a press conference on the final day of the two-day review meeting.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition consists of the Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and the Congress party. Mr. Patole emphasized the Congress’s organizational strength and extensive support across all constituencies, asserting that people’s faith in the party has strengthened. The seat allocation will be discussed among all the alliance parties in the Maha Vikas Aghadi meeting, with a common goal of defeating the BJP.
In the previous general elections held in 2019, the Congress won only one seat out of the 25 it contested, specifically the Chandrapur seat. Meanwhile, the NCP emerged victorious in four out of the 19 constituencies it contested. The BJP secured 23 seats out of the 25 it contested, while its then-allied Shiv Sena (undivided) won 18 out of 23 seats it fought for.
The Chandrapur seat recently became vacant following the demise of the sitting MP, Suresh alias Balu Dhanorkar of the Congress party.
Mr. Patole confidently claimed that the countdown for the Narendra Modi-led BJP government has begun. He accused the government of looting public funds for the past nine years and benefitting industrialist friends. Asserting that the public is tired of this corruption, he believes they will not hesitate to bring down the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
He further stated that winds of change are sweeping across the country, with people considering the Congress as the only viable option. The recent review meeting showcased the enthusiastic participation of party workers, and the Congress party stands ready to face elections at any time, according to Mr. Patole.
