One of the biggest pandemic our country has been facing since ages is ‘the crab mentality.’ The moment somebody does something big or great, there is a clan thats ready to pull that person down with a magnanimous force. It is as good as not being able to digest someone doing good work. Similar thing happened recently. We don’t spare our near and dear ones; we don’t spare our Prime Minister too.
On June 23, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at the joint session of the US Congress. PM Modi delivered the speech in English, and Congress followers and leaders have since repeatedly made fun of him for his use of the language. The youth arm of the grand old party, Indian Youth Congress, tweeted in Hindi: “Speak English in a way people close their ears” in comparison to disqualified Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s address in the US during his recent trip.
Supriya Shrinate, the chairwoman of the Congress’ social media and digital platforms committee, tweeted errors made by PM Modi during his talk. Even though there were two teleprompters, Shantanu, a supporter of the Congress, made fun of Prime Minister Modi and claimed he was blind. John Samuel, the Congress IT and social media coordinator argued that PM Modi’s supporters do not comprehend what the rest of the world hears when he says and that it was amusing that his sentence was difficult for any decent person to understand. He remarked something very bad.
Samuel declared towards the end of his Twitter tirade that Congress supporters would never permit anyone to damage the nation’s reputation. The claim was made by a fan of the Congress, the same Congress led by Rahul Gandhi who has consistently misled the world by damaging India’s reputation.
PM Modi does not speak English as a first language. His first language is Gujarati, and Hindi is his second. He is commonly known to have outstanding English comprehension and typically responds to questions in English with Hindi. Rahul Gandhi, on the other hand, has always attended schools with an English medium. He most likely speaks English as his native language. He frequently receives jeers for his poor Hindi because it is spoken by the vast majority of people in India. Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, has also struggled to become fluent in Hindi while living in India. She attempted to talk in Hindi, but she found it difficult.
Looking back at PM Modi’s addresses in various regions of the nation, we can see that he consistently seeks to engage with the locals in their language. He will incorporate a few phrases from the state’s native tongue into his address to personalise it.
The speeches of Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi frequently lack such efforts. It is a known truth that BJP leaders who do not speak English, such as Prime Minister Modi, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Tamil Nadu BJP State President Annamalai, and others, have greatly increased in favour with the general public. No one cares what language PM Modi or other leaders speak, whether they are in India or elsewhere. They seek a relationship with these leaders, and PM Modi and other BJP leaders are skilled at building one.
It’s simple to make fun of someone’s accent or vocabulary, yet these traits do not make a leader. Congressman Shashi Tharoor would have been India’s prime minister at least once by now if speaking good English were a requirement for the position. The reality is he did not, and neither did Rahul Gandhi, despite being “discovered” repeatedly over almost a decade.
Insults aimed at PM Modi’s ethnicity and language
It’s not the first time that Congress politicians have made fun of PM Modi’s accent or upbringing. They have continuously made fun of him by calling him a “chaiwala”. PM Modi is from an extremely low-class household. As a young boy, he used to sell tea at a railway station. He was elected Gujarat’s Chief Minister and afterwards India’s Prime Minister thanks to the democratic process. Mani Shankar Iyer, a senior in the Congress, famously remarked: “Modi cannot become prime minister in the twenty-first century. During a Congress meeting, someone said, “If he wants to distribute tea, we can arrange for that.
Rahul Gandhi coined the phrase “Chowkidar Chor Hai” when the prime minister referred to himself as the country’s guard or Chowkidar. At various rallies, he insisted on his fans repeatedly chanting the catchphrase. He was forced to apologise in front of the Supreme Court for frequently speaking disparagingly of the PM.
Rahul Gandhi made fun of Prime Minister Modi’s last name and questioned whether being a crook was related to having the last name Modi. As a result of his insults, he was expelled from the Parliament and given a two-year defamation sentence. Everyone has hope that they can lead the country no matter what thanks to Prime Minister Modi’s ascension in the political sphere. However, because the elite leadership of the Congress fails to recognise the beauty of the constitution in PM Modi’s political career, the same modest upbringing becomes a target of ridicule and mockery. For them, leadership requires the ability to speak English and a sense of haughtiness.
Everywhere he goes, PM Modi loves to show off his Indian heritage. PM Modi sets the example for a proud generation by donning traditional clothing and headgear on travels to various states and by donning jackets made of recycled plastic. The grand old party continues to make fun of him for the things that make people love him while painfully failing to understand the truth of the situation.
One of the basic manners each Indian should follow is to respect the country and whoever is bringing respect to the nation. While we have an increasing number of youngsters wanting to go abroad and settle, we also have many Indians who love to criticise their own country and derive pleasure from sadistic conversations about India. We are in a position in India where the whole world is watching us grow. The world envies how fast we have climbed the ladder of respect and importance on the international map.
