The Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) and Amarjit Singh, also known as Bittu, the gunman and prime suspect in the murder of Baba Tarsem Singh, the head of the ‘karseva’ sect in Nanakmatta Gurdwara, were engaged in combat in the early hours of Tuesday in the Bhagwanpur area of Haridwar. The state’s top police officer was quoted in the news agency ANI.
Director General of Police (DGP) Abhinav Kumar of Uttarakhand told the news agency that Amarjit Singh, a gunman with a ₹1 lakh bounty on his head, was murdered while his accomplice absconded. According to the top policeman, a joint operation between the Haridwar Police and the Uttarakhand Special Task Force has been initiated to track down the fugitive accused.
According to the police, more than sixteen cases have been filed against Amarjeet Singh.
The murder of Baba Tarsem Singh:
On March 28, two attackers on bikes shot and killed Baba Tarsem Singh, the ‘karseva’ chairman of Nanakmatta Gurdwara in Udham Singh Nagar. A few days after the murder, Harbansh Singh Chugh, a former IAS officer, and two other people, identified as Pritam Singh and Baba Anoop Singh, were the targets of a formal complaint filed at the Nanakmatta police station.
Jasbir Singh, a sevadar of the karseva, claimed that Chugh and the other two people mentioned in the FIR plotted Tarsem Singh’s murder. According to ANI, he further asserted that other people were involved in the purported murderous scheme.
The state police had earlier declared that they were searching for the other culprits while conducting a comprehensive investigation into the killings and raids in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
In relation to the case, three additional individuals were also taken into custody. Authorities accused them of enlisting criminals, giving them weapons, and providing resources to plan the crime.
According to DGP Kumar, the Uttarakhand Police zealously pursued the perpetrators of Baba’s murder, viewing it as a challenge.
The DGP further stressed that those who perpetrate such heinous crimes in Uttarakhand will face harsh consequences from the police.
Pushkar Singh Dhami, the chief minister of Uttarakhand, has directed the police to quickly detain the suspects after keeping a careful eye on events following Tarsem Singh’s death.
