Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was accused by two female wrestlers of caressing their breasts and stomachs while pretending to check their respiration. According to reports, the Delhi Police has requested photographs, audio recordings, and videos from two female wrestlers who claim that BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh touched their breasts and stomachs while claiming to be checking their breathing. The police also requested that they provide photographic proof of a supposed “hug” that Brij Bhushan gave to one of the complainants.
On April 21, at the Connaught Place police station in New Delhi, the two adult female wrestlers filed formal complaints against Brij Bhushan, citing several instances of sexual harassment and misbehaviour. These incidents involved groping, inappropriate touching, and unwanted physical contact. They happened at competitions, during warm-ups, and even at the WFI office in New Delhi. These have been mentioned in the accusations that the female wrestlers have made against Brij Bhushan.
The women wrestlers received separate notifications on June 5 under Section 91 of the CrPC, and they had one day to reply. Additionally, a wrestler was mentioned as saying that they had offered whatever proof they had against Brij Bhushan. According to reports, the police requested vital information from the complaints, including the dates and times of the claimed occurrences, the length of their visits to the WFI office, the names of their roommates, and the identities of any potential witnesses, especially if they were away from home at the time. The hotel where one of the wrestlers slept while visiting the WFI office was also a topic of interest to the police.
Additionally, the police sent separate letters to a wrestler and a member of her family, requesting information regarding allegedly threatening phone calls they received after reporting Singh. The relative was expressly asked to supply any media about the threatening calls, including videos, photos, phone recordings, and WhatsApp discussions. The Investigating Officer assigned to the Connaught Place police station signed these notices.
On Saturday, the protesting wrestlers said Brij Bhushan was using his power to compel sexual harassment victims into changing their stories. They vowed to restart their protest if no serious action was taken against him by June 15. The wrestlers stopped their protest after the government promised that a chargesheet will be filed against the WFI chief on June 15. One of the wrestlers leading the protest, Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik, claimed that the victims are being broken.
