As the Congress party continued the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra on Tuesday, party members clashed with police officers as they attempted to enter Guwahati. Rahul Gandhi and other leaders were among the almost 5,000 Congress employees who were stopped by the state government’s robust police presence. The cops then used lathi-charge as the partygoers attempted to breach their barricades.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attacked the Congress for suspected “naxalite tactics” and claimed he has instructed the state police chief to file a complaint against Rahul Gandhi for allegedly “provoking” the gathering. “I have directed @DGPAssamPolice to file a report against your leader, @RahulGandhi, on the grounds of inciting the mob, and to use the video you have shared on your accounts as proof. In a post on X, Sarma said, “Your disorderly behavior and disregard for established protocols have caused a severe traffic bottleneck in Guwahati now.
According to the Congress, Bajrang Dal and JP Nadda staged a demonstration along the path intended for the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ in Assam, but their march was halted.
As the Congress party reached the state on Thursday, it has been accusing the Assam administration and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of interfering with their foot march.
Speaking at a meeting close to the border with Guwahati, Rahul Gandhi said that while Congressmen would not disobey the law or disturb the peace, it does not imply that they are weak.
“The PM, the Union Home Minister, and the chief minister of Assam may disobey the law, but Congress will never do it. This does not, however, imply that we are helpless. Rahul Gandhi said, “Congress workers are ‘Babbar Sher’.”
Rahul Gandhi took a jab at Prime Minister Modi by stating, “Only one person is allowed to enter the temple today,” in reference to the Ram Mandir event, after being refused entry to the Assamese temple earlier on Monday. Rahul Gandhi then went on a dharna to make a protest.
Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge were invited to the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of the new Ram temple in Ayodhya, but they declined, citing the occasion as a BJP-RSS gathering in advance of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
