On a petition challenging the notices allowing the exchange of Rs 2,000 currency notes without a request sheet and ID verification, the Supreme Court on Friday declined to hear the case urgently. There is no urgency in the petition, a vacation bench of justices Aniruddha Bose and Rajesh Bindal said after reading the registry’s report. The Supreme Court ordered that the case be brought before Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud during the summer break. It is regrettable, according to the petitioner’s attorney Ashwini Upadhyay, that the Supreme Court is not taking up such a crucial issue. The supreme court said that the dispute must come to a conclusion since this is a court and not a public forum. The supreme court has now turned down a request for an immediate hearing on the matter twice. The top court announced on June 1 that it would not be hearing Upadhyay’s petition challenging the notifications during the summer break and declined to list it for an urgent hearing. The attorney had previously claimed that terrorists and criminals were exchanging Rs 2,000 banknotes without a requisition slip or other form of identification, such as an Aadhaar card.
