After receiving permission from the Allahabad High Court to conduct the survey, a team from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) arrived at the Gyanvapi mosque premises adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. They immediately began a scientific assessment of the complex in the midst of tight security.

Let’s get an understanding of how archaeologists figure out the age, period, and style of sculptures, as well as what methodologies ASI will be utilising at the Gyanvapi survey site in Varanasi while the nation waits with bated breath to hear what the findings of the ASI will disclose. While everyone’s attention is focused on what the ASI will find, let’s get this out of the way first. It is noteworthy that ASI has guaranteed the court that the survey will be non-invasive and that there will be no excavating at the site, nor will any damage be caused to the structure by the procedures that will be utilised.

Stone sculptures can be dated based on their style, the strata they were carved from, and other characteristics. Archaeologists accomplish this goal through the use of a variety of techniques, one of which is called relative dating.

The relative dating method is a methodology that can be used to determine the chronological sequence of artefacts even when the exact age of the artefacts is unknown. When people talk about the age of a specimen or formation, they are referring to its stratigraphic or archaeological age. Without knowing the exact absolute ages of the fossils or artefacts in a collection, one can still use these archaeology dating techniques to determine how old they are in comparison to other items in the collection.

A further technique that investigates the variability of particular types of things discovered at a site is called seriation. Based on the idea that one ethnic design would gradually replace an older style over time, a chronology has been developed. It is utilised in circumstances where other absolute dating procedures, such as radiocarbon dating, are unable to be used. Stone tools, pottery shards, and other artefacts can all be dated by the process of segregation.

The method involves placing various things discovered at a site in the order that they occurred in time. Although this method cannot determine the exact age of an object, it can distinguish between older and more recent items found at a place.

It is important to note that the Hindu plaintiffs in the Gyanvapi case requested permission, in their appeal, for carbon dating of the Shivling that was discovered on the disputed Gyanvapi complex and the walls and other structures on the premises. In this setting, having a solid understanding of what carbon dating is and how it operates is vitally crucial.

Radiocarbon dating, often known as carbon-14 dating, is a method that may determine the age of organic materials that are up to 60,000 years old. This technique was developed by scientists. Willard Libby, a professor at the University of Chicago, is credited with developing the method in the late 1940s. The carbon-14 dating method is predicated on the concept that carbon-14 isotopes undergo radiative decay throughout thousands of years. The method of carbon dating is not applicable in every circumstance. It is not possible to use it to determine the age of non-living things like rocks with this method.

Radiometric dating encompasses a wide variety of different methods, one of which is known as carbon-14 dating. Radiometric dating is a way of estimating the age of anything based on the presence of a radioactive isotope within it, such as the existence of a radioactive isotope in a wooden object, a rock, or a fossil. This can be done using rocks, fossils, or rocks. To determine the age of geologic materials, radiometric dating employs the use of a radioactive element with a relatively short half-life. Methods of dating that use carbon-14 and potassium-14/argon-40 are currently considered to be the most advanced.

The idea behind radiometric dating is that one may determine the age of a sample by comparing the presence of a radioactive isotope in the sample to the known abundance of that isotope on Earth as well as the known rate at which it decays, which is referred to as its half-life.

One of the limitations of the technology is that it is unable to determine the age of a sculpture. Geologists make use of elements that have extended half-lives for this very reason. For instance, the amount of time it takes for potassium-40c to break down into argon is 1.26 billion years, whereas the amount of time it takes for beryllium-10 to break down into boron is 1.52 million years. The presence of these radioisotopes allows geologists to assign ages to rocks based on their composition.

A ground penetrating radar survey, often known as a GPR survey, is a geophysical imaging radar technology that uses radio waves to get images of subterranean features without the need to dig up the soil. Things that need to be photographed shouldn’t be buried too deeply in the ground (no more than tens of metres below ground level), as this would make it difficult to access them. The ASI team will conduct a ground penetrating radar (GPR) study in the region below the three domes at the Gyanvapi disputed site. The purpose of this survey is to assess whether or not the “mosque” at Gyanvapi was built on top of an already existing Hindu temple.

GPR Surveys are used to discover the exact location of natural or man-made objects underground, natural components, or to identify changes in their position. These surveys can also be used to determine whether or not there have been any changes in their position. The device collects photos by penetrating the earth with electromagnetic pulses at high frequencies (between 50 and 1,500 MHz). The transmitter and the antenna are the two pieces of equipment in GPR systems that are considered to be of the utmost significance. The radar signals would be transmitted to the ground from the transmitter, which would be located near the ground, and the antenna would pick up the reflected signals. A graphic recorder would be used to display the results of an analysis of the signals that were received.

A reliable ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey will produce data lines that each reflect a section of an image of the earth’s subsurface. A three-dimensional representation of the region being surveyed would be created by combining and utilising the data from all of the lines that were collected in a particular location. Signals from ground-penetrating radar have the potential to identify and capture images of a wide variety of materials, including concrete, plastic, metal, and natural materials.

At the same time that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is conducting research at the Gyanvapi complex in Varanasi, the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court against the verdict of the Allahabad High Court. The legal representation for the Masjid Committee petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn a high court judgement that would have permitted ASI to carry out the survey. However, the Supreme Court has indicated that it will investigate the matter.
