Next month is probably when the West Bengal panchayat elections will be held. Although these elections are seen as a weathervane for the 2024 Lok Sabha election, both the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party have their sights set on them.
The BJP’s main tool against the TMC administration in the state is the corruption charges. According to saffron party sources, three factors would be the main considerations while choosing candidates this time.
First of all, candidates need to be sincere. As the TMC is corrupt from top to bottom, it will be difficult to find 77,000 honest candidates, but it is crucial for us to provide the public honest alternatives, according to a BJP leader.
Second, the applicants have to have some education and good manners. According to a BJP source, panchayat leaders don’t have to be boisterous and violent.
Finally, according to sources, the party will only choose individuals who are fearless and capable of asserting their power.
“We always try to field excellent candidates who can increase the quality of representation in public life and work for the welfare of the people,” said Amit Malviya, the BJP’s West Bengal co-incharge, in an interview with News18.
Nevertheless, the TMC has said that everything is only for show and that the BJP would not make headway in the state.
Finding people that fit all three requirements, according to BJP officials, would be challenging but not impossible.
