The main building of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) is named after alumni and Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani. By giving the top institution financial support, the action is performed to recall his help. The IIT-B’s administration officially announced that Nandan Nilekani would be honored with a building built in his honor. The “Nandan Nilekani Main Building” shall hereafter be referred to as IIT Bombay’s main building.
To commemorate his 50 years of affiliation with the top technical institution in the nation, the co-founder of Infosys contributed Rs 315 crore.When Nilekani entered at IIT Bombay in 1973 to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, his relationship with the school officially started. He also served on the institution’s board of governors from 2011 to 2015.
The contribution will be used to build and support world-class infrastructure, promote research in cutting-edge engineering and technology sectors, and assist IIT Bombay’s environment for deep tech companies, according to a news statement issued by the authorities on the occasion. Notably, the contribution is referred to as “one of the largest donations made by an alumnus in India”.
IIT-Bombay has been a cornerstone in my life, forming my formative years and establishing the framework for my journey, Mr. Nandan stated as he signed the MOU with prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of the IIT Bombay. I am honored to give back and support this prestigious institution’s future as I mark my 50th year of affiliation with it.
The IIT Bombay administration previously aimed to generate $500 million (about 4,106 crore) over the next five years in order to carry out its upcoming objectives. However, Nilekani’s $38.5 million gift would serve as a “anchor contribution” and enable the institution to begin formulating strategies to realize its objectives.Nilekani had earlier given the institution Rs 85 crore, bringing his whole commitment to Rs 400 crore.
