Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky fired General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, the commander of the Ukrainian army, on Thursday, citing the need for a “renewal” of the military structure. Nearly two years after Russia’s invasion, Zaluzhnyi was replaced in a dramatic military shake-up by Oleksandr Syrsky, the commander of the ground forces.
“Starting today, a new management team will take over the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” Zelensky stated. “I appointed Colonel-General Syrsky as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”
In his statement, Zelensky claimed to have met Zaluzhnyi.
“We talked about the need for rejuvenation for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. We also talked about potential candidates for the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s new command. This renewal’s time has come,” he declared.
Zelensky claimed to have requested that the general stay “on his team.”
In a different statement that was released shortly after, Zaluzhnyi said that he had an “important and serious conversation” with Zelensky and that a decision had been reached to alter combat tactics and strategy.
“The responsibilities for 2022 and 2024 are not the same. As a result, everyone has to adjust to the new reality and should triumph collectively as well,” he stated.
The announcement follows days of rumours that Zelensky was thinking of firing Zaluzhnyi, who has been in charge of the war effort since February 2022 and is revered as a national hero by many Ukrainians.
According to Bloomberg, which cited a source familiar with the situation, the decision was made in response to growing hostility between the president and his top general.
Who is Oleksandr Syrsky?
Syrskyi, who was born in the Soviet Union’s Vladimir area in July 1965, has subsequently established himself as a prominent figure in the Ukrainian military. Enrolling in Moscow’s Higher Military Command School marked the beginning of his military career and put him in the company of many of his contemporaries, who are now important figures in the Russian armed services. After graduating in 1986, Syrskyi served for five years in the Soviet Artillery Corps, which helped shape his strategic thinking.
2019 saw Syrskyi appointed as the commander of Ukraine’s ground forces as a result of his rise through the ranks of the armed forces. Prior to this, he made a name for himself as the “Snow Leopard” because of his tactical skill and tenacity while commanding Ukrainian forces in the ceaseless battle against rebels supported by Moscow in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk provinces.
With Russia launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Syrskyi’s leadership has stood for victory the entire time. One of his most notable accomplishments was successfully defending Kyiv, the nation’s capital, in the early phases of the conflict. His quick counteroffensive in July 2022, which saw Russian forces driven back from Kharkiv while regaining large areas of land to the east and southeast, was a demonstration of his strategic genius.
The defence of Bakhmut in the east was one of the most emotional episodes in Syrskyi’s military career, characterised by its terrible cost and fierce intensity. Russia’s aspirations suffered significant losses as Syrskyi led Ukrainian forces to hold the line in the face of the terrible realities of urban warfare. Some questioned the expense of these kinds of conflicts, but Syrskyi emphasised the strategic importance of Bakhmut’s defence and how it hindered the Wagner mercenary organisation and undermined Russia’s overall war effort.
