On Friday, Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations, expressed his lack of optimism for a quick resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Guterres said during a news conference held in this city before to the G20 meeting that the two nations still don’t seem to be resolving their disagreement.
“When you have a conflict, all efforts of mediation are welcome,” he said when asked whether India could intervene to stop the war. However, I don’t hold out much hope for a quick resolution to the conflict. Regarding the need of reforming multilateral institutions, Guterres said that many of the current countries were not even there when these institutions were established.
“This is true for the UNSC and many others,” he said.
When asked whether India should join the UNSC, Guterres said, “It is not for me to decide who would be in the UNSC, it is for the members (to decide).”India, however, is undoubtedly the nation with the greatest population in the world today and a crucial member of the global system.
“All I can say is that I believe we need reforms in the multilateral system to reflect today’s world,” he said.
When asked whether a timetable for reforming the international institutions should exist, Guterres said, “There is a need to do it, but I’m not sure if we get it. However, I consider it crucial.
