A agreement for nuclear-powered submarines has been announced by the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom as a response to China’s assertive actions in the Indo-Pacific area.
The declaration was made during a summit conference in San Diego on Monday, when the leaders of the three nations said that the action is intended to maintain the Indo-Pacific region’s “free and open” status.
In San Diego, Biden made the announcement alongside the prime ministers of Australia and the United Kingdom. “With the support and approval of the Congress, beginning in the early 2030s, the United States will sell three Virginia-class submarines to Australia with the potential to sell up to two more if needed, jump-starting their undersea capability a decade earlier than many predicted,” Biden said.
This cutting-edge conventionally armed nuclear-powered submarine will function because it combines US technology with UK submarine architecture, according to him.
The future SSN for Australia, which Biden referred to as “SSN-AUKUS,” will likewise be a cutting-edge vessel built to take use of the greatest submarine technology from all three countries.
SSN-AUKUS, which will be developed and deployed by both Australia and the United Kingdom, will be based on the next-generation SSN design of the United Kingdom while combining cutting-edge US submarine technology.
“From this year, Australian people will work alongside US and UK workers at bases in our schools and shipyards as well as aboard vessels. Also, we’ll be making more port stops in Australia. In fact, the USS Asheville, a nuclear-powered submarine, is making a port visit in Perth right now,” Biden remarked.
The US and UK nuclear-powered submarines will be stationed in Australia on a rotating basis later this decade, he said, in order to assist Australia create the labor force it would need to construct and operate its fleet.
The partnership between the three nations, according to Albanese, is based on their shared values, dedication to democracy, and shared goal for a peaceful and prosperous future. He described it as a new chapter in their relationship.
“We confirm here in San Diego that the AUKUS agreement represents the single largest investment in Australia’s defense capability in our history, strengthening Australia’s national security and stability in our region; creating a future made in Australia with record investments in skills, jobs, and infrastructure; and delivering a superior defense capability into the future,” he said.
Australia will get three American Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarines starting in the early part of the next decade. According to him, this is the second occasion in history that the United States has shared its nuclear propulsion technology, and the first time in 65 years.
Speaking on the agreement, Sunak said, “President Kennedy talked of a greater purpose: the preservation of freedom, peace, and security, sixty years ago here in San Diego. We are standing here now with the same goal in mind. Realizing that, in order to achieve it, we must create new partnerships and overcome novel challenges, as we always have. “During the last 18 months, the difficulties we confront have become worse. The unlawful invasion of Ukraine by Russia, China’s increasing aggressiveness, Iran’s conduct that destabilizes the region, and North Korea’s actions all pose threats to the stability of the globe, he added.
“With this new reality, it is more crucial than ever that we boost our own nations’ resilience. That is the reason the UK announced today that our military budget would be significantly increased.
“We are adding £5 billion over the next two years, bringing our military spending to around 2.25 percent of GDP, effective immediately. This will enable us to upgrade our nuclear industry, deliver AUKUS, and reinforce our deterrence while also replenishing our war reserves. As their security is also our security, continuing to assist Ukraine militarily is our top priority, Sunak said.
