Dr. Abhishek Swarnkar, a 39-year-old scientist who worked at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), was killed in a parking dispute close to his Mohali rental property.
West Bengal native Dr. Swarnkar was allegedly attacked and shoved by his neighbor, Monty, over a parking spot on Tuesday night.
He was taken to the hospital immediately after the incident, but he passed away from his wounds. Police have launched an investigation based on CCTV evidence after the accused’s family sought action.
After working in Switzerland, Dr. Abhishek, a bright scientist whose work was published in foreign publications, had just returned to India.
He had started working as a project scientist at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Mohali. He was receiving dialysis at the time of the occurrence, having recently had a kidney transplant from his sister, who was the donor.
He was taken to the hospital immediately following the confrontation, where he eventually passed away from his wounds. The victim resided in Mohali’s sector 67 with his parents.
Monty and other people may be seen standing close to his bike in CCTV footage. A dispute erupted as Swarnkar came to move the car, and Monty allegedly pushed him to the ground and started beating him.
Additionally, Monty was seen repeatedly striking Abhishek in the stomach on the CCTV tape. Abhishek fell to the ground and couldn’t get up.
As neighbors came out to observe the situation, Dr. Swarnkar was left lying on the ground as both families stepped in to separate them.
The victim’s family has demanded that the accused face severe consequences. To move forward with their investigation into culpable homicide that does not qualify as murder, police are reviewing the CCTV evidence.
In cities like Delhi, similar instances of neighbors fighting over parking spots have recently gone viral.
